We are proud to share exciting news from the West Coast Private Game Reserve: the successful release of a herd of 11 Cape buffalo into our protected wilderness. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and ecosystem restoration.
The Herd
The released herd consists of:
10 young cows
1 strong bull
Together, they represent the foundation of a healthy, sustainable breeding population. By starting with young animals, we are ensuring longevity and strong genetic diversity for the future of the herd.
Why Cape Buffalo Matter
The Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of Africa’s iconic “Big Five.” Historically, buffalo roamed widely across the Western Cape, but human settlement and farming pressure caused their numbers to disappear in this region.
By reintroducing buffalo to the West Coast Private Game Reserve, we are:
Restoring ecological balance: Buffalo play a key role in grazing dynamics, which helps maintain healthy grasslands and supports other species.
Strengthening biodiversity: Their presence contributes to a richer, more resilient ecosystem.
Creating a conservation stronghold: Establishing buffalo here helps secure their future in the Western Cape.
The Release Event
After a month of quarantine and adjustment in a grazing Boma, the release onto the reserve took place on the 18th of September, under careful supervision by our wildlife management team. After some initial hesitation, the herd decided to have a peek outside the Boma, and once they smelled freedom they were off!
Witnessing the moment when the animals took their first steps onto the reserve was nothing short of spectacular — a powerful reminder of nature’s resilience and the importance of protected spaces.
Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning of the West Coast Private Game Reserve’s journey with Cape buffalo. As the herd settles, we will monitor their health and movement closely to ensure they adapt well to their new home.
Our vision is that, in time, visitors will be able to experience the thrill of seeing a breeding herd of Cape buffalo thriving on the reserve — a sight that connects the West Coast to its natural heritage in a powerful way.
We invite you to share in this exciting chapter of conservation. Follow our updates to see how the herd grows, thrives, and shapes the landscape.
